Deterioration of Mental Health in Teenagers

In January 2021, a study suggested heavy social-media use was linked to negative well-being and self-esteem among teenagers. Other key factor affecting young people's mental health include the coronavirus pandemic.

Adolescence is a unique and formative time. Physical, emotional and social changes can make adolescents vulnerable to mental health problems. Also, it is a crucial period for developing social and emotional habits important for mental well-being. These include adopting healthy sleep patterns; exercising regularly; developing coping, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills; and learning to manage emotions. Protective and supportive environments in the family, at school and in the wider community are important.

I am passionate about helping adolescents cope with these challenges better and I donate a percentage of each session's earnings to Mind, a registered charity supporting "Better Mental Health."

Sessions usually last 50 minutes and take place at regular, planned times. They can be in-person or online.

The number of sessions you have will depend on the type of therapy you’re having and your personal circumstances,

but I recommend around 12-16 weeks.

Adolescents with mental health conditions are particularly vulnerable to social exclusion, discrimination, stigma (affecting readiness to seek help), educational difficulties, risk-taking behaviours and physical ill-health.

  • Globally, one in seven 10-19-year-olds experiences a mental disorder

  • Depression, anxiety and behavioural disorders are among the leading causes of illness and disability among adolescents.

  • Suicide is the fourth leading cause of death among 15-19 year-olds.

  • The consequences of failing to address adolescent mental health conditions extend to adulthood, impairing both physical and mental health and limiting opportunities to lead fulfilling lives as adults.
